KARACHI, July 10: Flouting all types of traffic rules by the transporters at the roundabout of Lea Market is now a common sight and a nuisance to general public, who have to face frequent traffic jams because of haphazard way of parking, a survey shows.

The residents hold the upcountry transporters responsible for creating chaotic conditions by violating all traffic rules.

An area resident said, “They have occupied every open space of the market, including old tonga stand illegally. There is not a single place left around the market without illegal parking of vehicles and it seems that the situation is beyond the control of authorities and traffic police,” the resident remarked, saying that one could hardly walk on the footpaths in peak hours.

In the past, several campaigns had been launched against illegal structures creating hindrances in the smooth flow of traffic, but these could not produce desired results as encroachers staged comeback after every operation.

Another resident of the area said, “We cannot freely move in Lea Market, Kajoor Bazaar, and places around Mohabat Khanji Road, Kharadar and Mithadar due to illegal parking of vehicles everywhere.”

He said some time ago goods transport business had been halted in the old city areas such as Chandbibi Road, Nanakwara and Bimpura areas because of effective action taken by Saddar Town authorities, but no such action was taken in Lyari Town where transporters had built their illegal termini at several places of the town, they maintained.

Moreover, he added, frequent hue and cry by the public for shifting of these terminuses outside the residential areas did not make any impact on the administrations.

A complete chaos could be witnessed during peak hours when the upcountry transporters parked their vehicles in the middle of roads, blocking the traffic in complete violation of rules.

The residents have urged the government to shift the termini from the residential areas.
