PESHAWAR, July 9: The anti-smuggling unit of Customs Collectorate seized 1,180kg of hashish from a van having a fake monogram and a number plate of a sensitive government agency and arrested four smugglers on the Kohat Road on Saturday. According to an official statement, the Customs Collectorate in Peshawar had been tipped off about the smugglers so they erected a barricade on Kohat Road. Around 5:30am they saw the van arriving and signalled it to stop.

The four smugglers, who were wearing government agency uniforms, were asked to get out of the van. The anti-smuggling unit then recovered 1,180kg of hashish concealed in secret cavities of the van.

The smugglers intended to take the hashish from Dara Adamkhel, a semi-autonomous Frontier Region of Kohat, to Peshawar from where it would have been smuggled to Karachi.

Customs officials have registered an FIR.

TWO HELD: The city police have arrested two men who were trying to escape after killing an Afghan national, near Suray Pul, on Saturday.

Officials said that two Afghan refugees, Amanullah and Malang, residents of Mohmand Agency and Kunar province of Afghanistan respectively, were going somewhere in a taxi after attending a local court in Peshawar.

Three men, who were waiting for them near the Suray Pul, opened fire killing Amanullah on the spot. Malang was injured. Later, he was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital, officials said.

The police succeeded in arresting two of them: an Afghan national called Shezada, a resident of Kunar province, and Bilal, a resident of Shabqadar Fort. The third — Din Mohammad — managed to escape.
