HYDERABAD, July 8: Ms Fauzia Saharan, wife of a detained leader of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz, Ghulam Nabi Saharan, has threatened self-immolation along with her children if her husband was not released within three days. She was speaking at a news conference at the press club on Friday. She alleged that her husband was arrested by the personnel of some secret agencies on July 4, in the jurisdiction of Bhittai Nagar police station and since then he was being held incommunicado.

She feared that her husband might be eliminated like another JSMM leader, Samiullah Kalhoro. She claimed that no case was pending against her husband at any police station and demanded that she should be officially informed in which case her husband had been arrested.

She appealed to the nationalist parties and human rights organisations to save the life of her husband.

MINISTER: Sindh Minister for Education Dr Hameeda Khuhro has said that effective strategy is needed for preserving cultural heritage and conserving the environment.

She was addressing the launching ceremony of a book, “Sindh State of Environment and Development”, at a local hotel.

The function was organized by IUCN.

The minister said that apathy of organizations concerned had been destroying cultural heritage, archaeological sites and monuments.

She said, “It is time to stop this. It is time to identify weaknesses, and it is time to take action for the preservation and conservation of our national heritage.”

Talking about the book, published by ICUN, she said that though it had not been updated, yet it was a good effort in identifying major problems in preserving cultural heritage.

The minister said these problems needed special attention of the government and the community as well.

She said, “Preservation and development of our language (Sindhi) is an important factor for survival of our cultural heritage and identity, and there is room for improvement in this field because we have done nothing even for exploration of Latif’s poetry.”

Sindh University vice chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui lauded efforts of IUCN for doing research on cultural heritage and environmental problems of Sindh and said that more research on the subject was needed.

Sindh IUCN incharge Ali Raza Rizvi said effective management of Sindh’s natural and socio-economic resources was necessary for development of the province.

Nasir Panhwar, Dr Ghulam Ali Allana, A. Hameed Sindhi, Prof Ghulam Hussain Khaskheli and Dr Haji Khan Keerio spoke on the occasion.
