SUKKUR, July 7: There was a medium flood at Guddu as about 385,000 cusecs water was passing through the barrage. Speaking at a press conference in Guddu on Thursday, Sindh Irrigation Secretary Ashfaq Memon said a huge of swell of 500,000 cusecs would pass through the barrage on Saturday. He said he visited the Qadirpur loop band, Rawnti band, SM band, J-spur, and Guide right band where heavy machinery and bulldozers had been shifted to cope up with any untoward incident.
He said the residents of nearby villages had been asked to shift to safer places or move to camps established by the local administration.
During the inspection of the Qadirpur loop band, the area people complained to the secretary that the loop band was in vulnerable condition and irrigation officials were paying no heed towards its repair and strengthening.
The secretary directed the irrigation officials to shift stone, sand and heavy machinery in the area and keep vigilance over the loop band round the clock.
Replying to a question, he said 500,000 cusecs water was released by India in Chenab river which would not affect the Indus.
He asked the villagers to extend helping hand to the irrigation officials and patrol the protective bands especially at night and inform immediately regarding any leakage.

Brigadier Nisar Ahmed, who, along with district coordination officer, DPO and irrigation officials, visited the Akil Agani Loop Bund on Thursday, said it had been the duty of the civil administration to evacuate those people who had been marooned to safer places.
The DCO, while briefing the army officers, said that the length of the river protective bund in the district ran over 54 miles.
He said that 10 vulnerable locations lied in the district out of which the Akil Agani Loop Bund had been declared to be the most sensitive one.
Due to the sensitivity of this point, the Federal Flood Commission had given Rs82 million for strengthening its apron and the weaker portion, and 85 per cent work on it had been completed, he said.
More than 150 villages — nine in Ratodero taluka, 28 in Larkana and 120 in Dokri taluka — with a population of 41,284 were located inside the flood protective bund, the DCO said.
He said that 57 boats were available in the district which would be used for evacuating flood victims in time of crisis.
