ISLAMABAD, July 6: Chairman Senate Mohammedmian Soomro has called for immediate preventive measures against flood threats in certain areas of the country. Expressing sympathies with the people of the flood-hit areas, he appreciated the role of armed forces and the provincial governments in carrying out relief activities to protect the loss of life and property. Mr Soomro expressed satisfaction that necessary steps had been taken to provide all possible assistance and relief to the people of the affected areas.—APP

Our staff reporter adds: Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration on Wednesday dispatched relief goods to the homeless people of flood-hit areas in NWFP.

In this connection the consignment of a truck loaded with edibles was sent to Charsadda.

The staff of ICT administration would hand over the consignment to the district coordination officer, Charsadda.

The deputy commissioner urged the masses to come forward to help the people in distress.

He said there was a dire need of donations and voluntary services to meet the challenge adding that district administration would send more edibles to the flood affected areas.

A reporter adds: The government will extend maximum assistance to the flood-affected people in the Northern Areas.

This was stated by Secretary Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Rasool Bakhsh Baloch while speaking at a ceremony held to receive relief goods at the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) here on Wednesday.

The secretary said 1,000 families had been affected by the recent floods.

He said the cabinet division had already dispatched relief goods to the area that would be enough for 400 families. Three trucks load of relief goods donated by the PRCS would be sufficient for the remaining 600 families, he added.

Mr Baloch said the government would formulate a comprehensive strategy to handle floods and other calamities in the Northern Areas.

He thanked the PRCS for the generous assistance to the flood-hit people.

Our reporter adds: PRCS Secretary-General Khalid Kibriya said the society was already busy in relief operations in the flood-hit areas of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). Besides, the PRCS Punjab branch was on the alert to meet any untoward situation in the province.
