ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood on Thursday informed the National Assembly that 1,449 posts of teachers are vacant in the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE)’s supervised educational institutions.

In response to a question asked by MNA Aslam Khan, the minster in a written reply told the house that there were 1,449 posts of vacant teachers (direct and promotion) in various cadres.

A total of 791 posts of non-teaching (direct and promotion) staff are also lying vacant. Out of these, 42 posts are of officers and 749 are of officials.

He said there was no proposal under consideration of the government to fill the vacant posts of teaching and non-teaching staff because the matter was sub judice in the Supreme Court in the form of an appeal filed against a decision of Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Once the matter pertaining to the regularisation of contractual and daily wage employees is decided by the Supreme Court, the directions given by the apex court will be implemented in letter and spirit, the minister said.

Around 2,000 daily-wage teaching and non-teaching employees are serving in various schools and colleges for years. They have been demanding regularisation of their services.

Last year, the IHC, according to teachers, decided the case in their favour. However, instead of implementing the court order, the federal government filed an appeal in the Supreme Court.
