LAHORE: Doctors are trying to save the lives of two national cyclists, Waheed Ahmed and Zeeshan Ali, who were injured in a road accident during a practice session.

The accident took place when both the top-notch cyclists of the country -- belonging to the Sui Southern Gas Company -- were on a routine road practice mission from Lahore to Sheikhupura.

“Waheed is in critical condition following a severe injury to his backbone while Zeeshan, who suffered a head injury, is stated to be out of danger at the moment,” SSGC coach Najeeb-ur-Rehman said while talking to APP here on Monday.

“Zeeshan has shown slight improvement which, according to the doctors, is a positive sign while Waheed is still unconscious and has been put on ventilator to support his life.”

Zeeshan has represented the country in a number of international events abroad while Waheed is the national gold medallist, and both are considered national cycling assets by experts.

“SSGC is providing [both of] them all the necessary medical treatment in order to save their lives as they are national heroes. I appeal to the nation to pray for their life and speedy recovery,” Najeeb expressed.

Meanwhile Pakistan team coach, Nazakat Ali, said the tragic accident had left the entire cycling community in a state of shock. “Officials of the Pakistan Cycling Federation and international and national cyclists are praying for the health of the inured riders.

“We all stand besides the families of both of our cyclists during this difficult time.”
