Concern over rising sugar price

Published June 30, 2005

VEHARI, June 29: The people have expressed their concern over the increasing sugar prices in local markets during the last three days. Reports said sugar in Gagoo Mandi, Burewala, Mailsi and Vehari areas was being sold for Rs27 to Rs30 per kg. A shopkeeper of Vehari bazaar told Dawn that the millers had increased the price of 50kg sugar bag from Rs1,300 to Rs1,450.

Meanwhile, the people criticized the district government for its failure to overcome the ‘artificial shortage’ by certain stockists.

A local government spokesman said they could not control price or ‘artificial shortage’ as their powers had been withdrawn.
