LAHORE, June 28: Pakistan captain Inzamamul Haq has expressed the hope that the new rules adopted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) will prove helpful in creating more interest in the game.

Talking to Dawn, Inzamam said it was premature to predict how much the rules would serve the cause but “I wish the game should be promoted through them”.

The ICC chief executive’s committee in London has decided substitution of the player in One-day International cricket, according to which the teams will be allowed to replace a player at any stage of the match.

The replaced player will be ruled out of the rest of the game while the replacement will be allowed to assume any remaining batting or bowling duties.

According to another change, fielding restrictions will also be introduced on a 10-month trial to try and improve the game as a spectacle.

Currently, fielding sides are allowed just two players in the circle for the first 15 overs.

Those rules will now apply for the first 10 overs but must also be reintroduced for 10 more overs during the innings in two blocks of five over each at the fielding captain’s discretion.

“Yes it will be something difficult for the captain to choose last 10 overs in two phases to get maximum benefits,” Inzamam said.

Inzamam was also happy over Pakistan playing four Tests during next year’s tour of England.

“I think a good number of Test matches in a series are good both for the team and for an individual player because they could get maximum opportunity to show their mettle,” he said.

He said that no series of only two Tests should be approved as it served nothing.
