NAWABSHAH, Jan 11: The Sindh minister for health, population and welfare, Ahsan Ahmed, has termed the death of Uma Devi, MBBS student, suicide.

Uma Devi, second year MBBS student, had hanged herself in her room at the Peoples Medical College (PMC) hostel. The students of the PMC had protested against the administration and held them responsible for her suicide.

The minister reached Nawabshah on Wednesday to personally enquire into the suicide case. He met the students separately and concluded that Uma’s death was a suicide as she was admitted in the college on self-finance basis and was a dull student.

He checked the previous results of Uma which showed that she was a mediocre student and after getting failed in the examination, she committed suicide.

He visited the Peoples Medical College and expressed satisfaction over its maintenance.

Talking to newsmen at the press club here, the minister said that hospital needed proper cleaning. He said that he had met the district Nazim, Faryal Talpur, and had requested her to help in the construction of a guest house for the relatives of the patients, as they come from far flung areas and had no place to stay in the hospital.

He said that “roll back malaria” programme had been started by WHO and initially some areas would be sprayed.

He said that the DCO had no power to transfer a 19-grade officer and the orders issued by the DCO, Sukkur, were cancelled.
