SWABI, June 26: Over 200,000 children of Swabi are not going to school and the government has no plan to create suitable opportunities for their parents to get them enrolled, says a survey.

According to the 1998 census, the population of the district is 1.026 million; total area 1,543 square km; population growth rate is 3 per cent and the number of children under five is 137,988.

About 46,113 girls have been enrolled in 411 government primary schools; 84,774 boys in 587 primary schools; 2,809 girls in 31 middle schools; 7,583 boys in 64 middle schools; 9,342 girls in 22 high schools; 29,129 boys in 65 high schools; 2,477 girls in higher secondary schools and 2,289 boys in higher secondary schools in the district.

The survey conducted by an NGO says 243,308 children are enrolled in 1,559 public and private sectors schools. There are 1,187 government schools in the area.

The main cause of their deprivation of education is stated to be poverty and their families being uneducated their main concern is to earn a livelihood.

They are not aware of the importance of education.

The most important aspect highlighted in the survey is that majority of the deprived children are girls.
