SRINAGAR, June 25: India’s army went on high alert on Saturday, to prevent more rebel attacks in occupied Kashmir’s main city, a day after a car bomb killed nine Indian soldiers and injured 17 people.

Troops used sniffer dogs to check for landmines, searched vehicles, and checked identity papers in Srinagar.

“We’re on high alert,” a paramilitary officer said. “We want to prevent attacks like Friday,” he said.

Nine soldiers were killed and 17 people wounded when a car bomb ripped through a bus carrying soldiers returning from holidays.

The bus was part of a military convoy that was attacked near Srinagar’s main tourist attraction, the Mughal-built Nishat garden on the shores of lake Dal.

It was the first major car bomb explosion in Srinagar in years but the second one in less than 11 days in the region.—AFP
