GUJRANWALA, June 25: Under the Punjab government notification, new city district governments of Gujranwala, Multan and Faisalabad will comprise seven, six and eight towns, respectively. In Gujranwala, the city and saddar tehsil councils have been divided into four towns — Nandipur, Aroop, Khialshahpur and Qila Dedar Singh towns. Similarly Naushera Virkan, Kamoki and Wazirabad tehsils have also been declared separate towns.

Earlier, a number of nazims, naib nazims, councillors and activists of the ruling PML had opposed division of the city tehsil council. They had sent a memorandum to the Punjab chief minister and expressed their reservations that all resources and income of the tehsil would be divided into four towns affecting development schemes. But City Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad and Tehsil Municipal Administrator Chaudhry Zubair Husain Nat, after their meeting with the chief minister in Lahore a week ago, had assured their supporters that the division had been dropped.

Meanwhile, the district council through a resolution on Saturday urged the government to hold local bodies election after summer.

The meeting also approved Rs470 million revised budget which could not spent on development in financial year 2004-05 and recommended that the amount should be spent on uplift in the next fiscal.

MULTAN: The district has been divided into six towns after giving it the status of city district government.

The new towns are Shah Ruken-i-Alam, Mumtazabad, Sher Shah, Bosan, Shujabad and Jalalpur Pirwala. The city tehsil municipal administration and Multan saddar tehsil council have been abolished and each of them is divided into two towns.

Similarly, the tehsil councils of Shujabad and Jalalpur Pirwala have been given the status of town councils.

Officials say Multan will fetch more funds from the provincial government after being granted the status of CDG.

The provincial government was giving the district a grant of Rs2.25 billion per annum for development and non-development expenditures but after being declared the CDG, funds expected from this source are Rs4 billion.

The staff of the Multan city and saddar tehsil councils have been directed to prepare lists of the assets of their respective councils so that they could be distributed accordingly between the new towns.

FAISALABAD: The district has been converted into eight towns.

The city and saddar tehsil municipal administration have been dissolved and divided into four towns.

However, TMAs of Chak Jhumra, Jaranwala, Tandlianwala and Samundri have been given the status of separate towns.

Four towns of the city areas have been renamed as Jinnah, Iqbal, Clock Tower and Millat towns. All rural areas of the previous saddar tehsil have been included in these four towns.
