Let us wait for 2019 General Election. Promises made by Rahul Gandhi to Farmers and unemployed youth will come true or not, has to be seen and that will decide the fate of Congress. No government can waive off the loans of farmers and unemployment will always be there whosoever rule the country because of population. No government is fully prepared to give employment to youths. However, it is to be seen that BJP will come or not in April/May 2019 election.

Rajasthan was misgoverned, and BJP was ruling MP and Chattisgarh from 15 years. However Modi will not be affected in General elections as those would be fought on national issues.

The collapse of BJP happened only in last 5 years, so we have consider anti-incumbency of 5 years and not 15 years. When MP CM and Chattisgarh CM were able to deliver and win elections during Manmohan Singh as PM, what went wrong for them when Modi became PM, is the question that needs to answered.

When, Modi tried to please all sections of people, including Muslims,he annoyed hard core Hindus, who expressed their anger by voting to Congress. Similarly, Modi tried to please Dalits by promulgating an ordinance to counter the Supreme Court judgement on SC/ ST atrocities act. Dalits became happy. But, in the process , he annoyed Forward castes, who showed their annoyance by voting to Congress. This shows that it is impossible for anybody to please everybody.

Loosing or winning State Elections does not affect General Elections. These elections have not won by Rahul and lost by Modi. In the States of Punjab/Rajasthan people are changing the governments every after the 5 years. In MP/Chattisgarh, BJP lost due to anti incumbency wave. I am also sure now from all the winning states congress will go for the big scams and loot to arrange the money for 2019 General Elections and will definitely pay the price after loosing the same.

India needs a strong central govt and voters know this. Congress with its new lease of life as it was on ventilater till y day , and United opposition even if it's formed may not last full term at the centre due to their greedy politicians. Voter will never like a mid term poll.

A timely wakeup call before 2019 elections.

Modi will not get to be the PM again in 2019, if results in the Hindi heartland, BJP's traditional fort, are any indication. Instead of using their popular mandate in UP for development, BJP's focus has been on changing names of places and instigating cow riots. What a waste! Die-hard bhakts are delusional though and offer no reason why they think Modi will come back.

Hail Democracy!! If you promise and don't fulfill then Voters will show you the door, irrespective of who you are, be it Modi or Rahul. It wasn't that Modi lost miserably. It was very close and few seats had made all the difference. Considering that Modi's party was ruling these states for a decade or so, the victory for congress wasn't that telling. So we still have high hopes for Modi in the next year election.

Come what may, Modi would win next election hands down. There's none else to challenge him at the top.

As an Indian this was a very positive development. This was not really a vote for Congress. Rather a vote against the cow and temple politics of the BJP. This is a strong warning to the BJP just before the general election. Let’s see if he listens.

This is a message for BJP that a vast majority of Hindus are secular minded and they will reject the politics of religion & polarization. Overall this is good for India. In any democracy, it is very important to have checks & balances in order to suppress dictatorial tendencies in the ruling government. Since 2013, BJP has thrashed the Congress in every contest, be it national or state level and this is the first time the Congress has tasted success in the last 5 years. This is a good lesson for both BJP & Congress that they should not take the Indian voter for granted and need to perform instead of talk.

This is how democracy should work. If leaders don't perform people will throw them from power.

@DK PAMNANI, In MP and Chattisgarh BJP was in power for 15 years. Country with more than 30% of the people below poverty line cant satisfy everybody and win for 15 years. So loss is inevitable eventhough in Chattisgarh it was quite bad. Raman Singh and Shivraj were good CM's but incumbency held on to them. B'cos of Modi they could come very close to winning MP. In Rajastan it is record that every time people vote for different party. So no surprise there. But surprise is that they won 73 seats.. Normally it is a washout of the ruling party. That is again Modi effect. In Ground level there is no much dis-state for Modi. So Loksabha elections will be different ball game. BJP may not win all the seats they won in 2014 but they will come close. Modi is safe for 2019.

@Vikram Sood, Distinction between local and national issues often creates grey areas. It's about definitions and their updated versions. If joblessness is a national issue, then a jobless voter should not consider his deprivation at state level elections? The fact of the matter is that the voter compiles all the possible dimensions into his mind before casting his vote. I don't agree with the argument that it would be a different ball game for Modi in april 2019. He has suffered with a severe blow in states elections and this misery is gonna carry him to the next general elections. This is a healthy invigorating sign of Democracy and signifies that voters are matured and they do not act as dumb, mute people. They take the decision after due thought and assessment of the ground situation. One cannot say that voters in India are fanatics and choose the ballot box on the basis of their faith or language or their geographical location. Even it has been noticed in earlier elections, that they choose different parties in State and central elections and that gives more credence to their acumen and maturity. Why Indian democracy is hailed throughout the globe, not because of Congress party, or BJP or because of mushroom of regional parties. They are all vibrant parties no doubt functioning smoothly under the watch dog of Election Commission, but all credit is attributed to the knowledgeable voters irrespective of their cast, creed and color.

An important pillar of a good democracy is a strong opposition.This election was not about hindutva. Hindutva has problem - but they are minor. .. and they will be overcome. The real problem is in the farming area. So many suicides, and so much worry, against which Rahul was promising a forgiveness of loans. The economics of farming land is the weak point. In Parallel, when the UK went though this change of farming economics over 150 years ago, most farmers were not allowed to vote. And therein lies the problem

Congress has promised that it will write-off the loans to farmers within first 10 days of forming the Govt. Let's see if they really do it or pull another one on people. If Congress writes-off the loans then it will face fiscal deficit while not writing off will be political death in 2019. These loans are for several thousands of crores of Rupees.

Reason of set back for bjp is simple. You can’t disrupt homogeneity of Indian society on the basis of cast and religion. Though Congress also played this card, matter is who played more. People have no choice, they have to choose one of them, but reality is this that both Congress and bjp don’t deserve to rule nation.

In MP BJP got more votes then Congress and in Rajasthan difference between the no. of votes of Congress is very small. Congress lost Mizoram and defeated in Telangana. These are regional elections and their effect upon the national election 2019 will be very little.

This is just a temporary setback. People had predicted that BJP was done after they had lost Delhi and Bihar in 2015, but they went on to win election after election. They are winning 2019 elections.

It is a state election and was under BJP rule for last 15 year or last 3 terms. No matter this loss, BJP still ruling in 16 state. Indan are clever enough and do not want a coalition govt. at the center. BJP will win again in the coming election in 2019.

@mkb, BJP also lost 10 out of 13 lok sabha by-elections and 17 out of 22 vidhan sabha by-elections. They are slowing down, losing seats and states one after another. Writing's on the wall.

Had BJP performed well in these elections, it would be a stamp on their performance, but the defeat has now left a question mark. Elections are only a few months away. It will be impossible for BJP and Modi to wipe out the stains of humility before general elections, tremors will be there for sure.

Modi also lost Karnataka state elections a few months ago. I heard Modi say that it was the seed for victory in 2019 National elections.

State elections have different agenda than the national ones! I am certain that people/voters will take a different view when voting in 2019 elections, as there is no real national figure acceptable to people as PM! Indian voters use discretion, they vote differently for state and national elections. In 2014 when Modi swept national elections BJP lost Delhi state election to AAP party.
