KARACHI, June 24: The funeral prayers of Mufti Atiqur Rehman and Mufti Muhammad Irshad were offered at Jamia Binoria Mosque located in SITE amid tight security here on Friday.

The funeral was attended by hundreds of students and faculty members of Jamia Binoria.

Earlier, the funeral prayer for Mufti Muhammad Irshad was offered at Burnes Road Madina Masjid from where his body was shifted to the SITE for a combined Namaz-i-Janaza.

Following the funeral prayers, Mufti Atiqur Rehman was buried in Jamia Binoria while Mufti Irshad’s body was taken to the Punjabi Sodagran Graveyard near Naval Colony.

Both the victims and Mufti Atiq’s son Ammad were returning from the Madina Masjid in their car (JB 1852) on Thursday when they were attacked. Police said that the two suspects reportedly on a motorcycle sprayed the vehicle with bullets. The incident occurred near the Sindh Secretariat.

On late Thursday night incident of violence were reported when enraged people pelted passing vehicles with stones in SITE area.

On Friday morning, students of Jamia Binoria took to the streets and blocked Shahrae Binoria by erecting barricades. They lit bonfire at different places and disrupted traffic.

Later, senior police officials contacted the faculty of the Jamia Binoria in order to persuade the enraged students to return to the university. Subsequently, announcements were made from the university calling the students to remain peaceful and not to get provoked.

Similarly, students from different madrassahs came on streets in some parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Sohrab Goth. They set some tyres on fire and pelted stones at passing vehicles. However, police reached the spots and defused the situation.

Tension also prevailed in Lasbela and Patel Para where some youths forced shopkeepers to close down their business and pelted stones on the passing vehicles in the morning.

Similar situation was witnessed on Super Highway where traffic remained suspended for an hour as enraged people pelted stones on the passing vehicle. The stretch from Sohrab Goth to Sajjad Restaurant remained disturbed as youths had lit bonfire on the road, police said.
