LAHORE, June 19: Parameters to regularize the services of doctors, working on a contract basis, are being finalized. The service structure of all doctors would be reorganized, Punjab Health Minister Dr Tahir Ali Javed told a delegation of medical teachers at his residence here on Sunday.

The health care system, the minister said, needed to be refurbished, and the government was paying special attention in this regard. Reforms were being introduced to launch programmes that targeted fundamental issues of public health.

Recommendations of various professional bodies of the community would be considered while formulating policy matters regarding the medical profession, he said.

The minister invited the Pakistani doctors serving abroad to join medical institutions and hospitals in the country.

He said the government would provide them attractive salary packages.

The stipend of trainee specialist doctors had been increased from Rs6,000 to Rs10,000 which would be further enhanced.

DEMO: Doctors will hold a peaceful demonstration in front of the Lahore Press Club on Monday to press for the acceptance of their demands.

In a statement on Sunday, Pakistan Medical Association’s Lahore branch secretary Dr Azeemuddin Zahid said the demonstration was a part of their struggle for regularization of services of doctors and the paramedical staff working on contract and their promotions and adjustment against the vacant posts.

The doctors had also observed a black day recently to express resentment against delay in the acceptance of their demands.
