Proposals on new towns submitted

LAHORE, June 19: Nazims of six towns presented their proposals in respect of creation of three more towns in the city district at a meeting chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Raja Basharat here on Sunday.

The nazims of Data Ganj Bakhsh, Ravi, Aziz Bhatti, Nishtar, Shalimar and Allama Iqbal towns gave their suggestions in respect of demarcation of the new towns for presentation to Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi for a final decision.

The government has decided to increase the number of towns in the city district because some towns such as Data Ganj Bakhsh Town are very large whereas others like Aziz Bhatti are very small.

The government proposes to create three new towns by curtailing the size of larger towns before the forthcoming local elections.

WAGONS ROUTES: The Punjab transport secretary has allowed operation of 1,540 wagons on 37 city district routes and specified the maximum number of vehicles for each route.

Punjab Minibus Owners Federation chairman Maulvi Abdul Rashid said this at a press conference at the press club on Sunday. He said the routes would be numbered from 101 to 137, and the previous route numbers would be cancelled. Routes would be allotted to the wagons which were not more than 10 years old, he said.

He said a maximum 90 wagons had been specified for route number 106; 80 each for routes 108 and 130; 70 for route No 105; 60 each for route No 101; 50 each for route Nos 104, 107, 111, 112, 113, 116, 125, 129 and 133; 45 for route No 102; 40 each for route Nos 109, 117, 119 and 126; 30 each for route Nos 103, 110, 118, 124, 127, 128, 134 and 135; 25 for route No 131, 25 for route 131; and 20 each for route Nos 114, 115, 121, 122, 132, 136 and 137.

Encroachments: Punjab Communication and Works Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin Khan has ordered immediate removal of encroachments from the highways.

Taking a serious view of ‘massive’ encroachments on different highways in the province, the minister directed the officials to ensure their removal with the assistance of police.

WATER SPORT: Punjab Tourism Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal has said the government has decided to develop water sports to promote tourism.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, the minister said the government would build an aquarium at Jallo Park at a cost of Rs90 million and develop water sport spots at Head Balloki in Kasur and Head Marralla in Sialkot at a cost of Rs20 million each.
