KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court on Monday awarded life imprisonment to two accused, said to be members of the Lyari gang warfare, for killing two policemen and injuring three others in an armed attack in 2013.

Mohammad Kamran, alias Baba, and Nauman, alias Nana, were found guilty of firing at a police party in which two constables, Faraz and Mudassir, were killed while three others received bullet injuries in the Kharadar police station remit.

The ATC-XVII judge, who conducted the trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison, pronounced the verdict, which was earlier reserved after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge found them guilty on the counts of premeditated murder, attempt to murder, terrorism and others.

The judge observed that the prosecution had successfully proved its charges against the detained accused beyond any shadow of a doubt and handed down life imprisonment to them.

According to the prosecution, the accused were associated with a criminal gang run by Wasiullah, which was engaged in gang warfare in Lyari. The prosecution alleged that the detained men had carried out an armed assault on the policemen in the Kharadar area by opening indiscriminate fire, killing two policemen and injuring three others. They had fled after committing the crime and were later arrested.

NBWs reissued

In the meanwhile, another antiterrorism court reissued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of the absconding suspect in a case pertaining to a grenade attack at the Islamic Research Centre Imambargah in October 2014.

The ATC-VII judge, who is conducting trial in the judicial complex inside the central jail, directed the investigating officer to arrest Ali Rehman, alias Toni, and produce him on the next date of hearing.

A minor girl, Batool, was killed while eight other people were wounded in the blast.

Toni has been booked in the present case with Saad Aziz, who was sentenced to death by a military court with other accused involved in the Safoora Goth carnage case.
