BAHAWALPUR, June 17: The agriculture department has not so far achieved the 698,000 acre target of cotton sowing in the Bahawalpur district. It was learnt here on Friday that as of now the cotton had been cultivated on 671,000 acres of land and a total production of about 1.1 million bales were expected with a yield of up to 26 maund per acre here.

During the last year, the sowing target in the district was about three per cent less as 682,000 acres of land had been brought under cotton cultivation instead of the projected target of 695,000 acres. It had brought a total 1.2 million bales of cotton production last year in the district.

Agriculture department officials claim that the sowing is still continuing and the target could be achieved within few days.

They further say that the present weather conditions are favourable for a better production in the area.

MEGA PROJECT: The Islami University, Bahawalpur, and Link Shopping University, Sweden, will shortly launch a joint mega research project here.

The mega project will be taken in hand under a memorandum of understanding signed between the two universities here on Saturday (today) with the signature of VC Prof Dr Munir Akhtar.

The MoU also envisages the exchange programmes of the research scholars, students, holding of special lectures and other mutual informative material in which HEC will also extend cooperation.

The MoU has reached through the efforts of the Link Shopping University’s Prof Dr Qamar Alwahab, who paid a visit to the university during the past months.

Earlier under the MoU, the Bahria Town management had agreed to provide a sum of Rs35 million to the Islamia University for the construction of a new block in the College of Engineering, a print media lab and installation of an FM radio station in the mass communication department.
