Irfan’s column

Published October 17, 2018

THIS is apropos Mr Irfan Husain’s article ‘Amateur night’ (Dawn, Oct 13). Coming from a respected veteran columnist and prolific writer, it was surely in bad taste.

Finance Minister Asad Umar is only human and he could, like all other human beings, have erred in judgment over the years. No one is infallible. Yes, Engro did incur losses during his tenure as CEO, but Mr Umar was also responsible for bringing unprecedented profits to the same company and that remains as undeniable as is the episode cited by Mr Husain.

At the height of his corporate career, Mr Umar decided to call it a day and left a job that was bringing him personal gains that were, to say the least, almost unprecedented in the national corporate sector. This he did to join politics in the hope of serving his country and the nation. This was no ordinary sacrifice and must be remembered and respected by all and sundry.

Give him a little time and he will prove his worth to the satisfaction of us all, including the respected columnist.
