KARACHI, June 16: A high-level inquiry committee has been constituted by the Sindh chief minister to inquire into the police failure to control the arson attack and riots, which broke out around NIPA Chowrangi soon after the bomb explosion at Madinat-ul-Ilm mosque on May 30.

Official sources said Sindh chief minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim in a letter to the provincial police officer, Asad Jahangir, expressed his dissatisfaction over police response to the incident at Madinat-ul-Ilm Imambargah and mosque at NIPA Chowrangi and subsequent incidents of arson resulting in the loss of precious lives and property.

He constituted a three-member committee to inquire into the poor response of the police and their failure to control the situation.

The inquiry committee comprises senior superintendents of police A.D. Khowaja, Sanaullah Abbasi and Ghulam Nabi Memon. A.D. Khowaja is serving as Director, Anti-Corruption Establishment, Sanaullah Abbasi, is town police officer, Saddar, and Ghulam Nabi Memon is the ADIGP (Operations) to CCPO, Karachi.

The committee has been directed to submit its finding within 15 days to the office of the Sindh chief minister. The sources said in the light of the committee’s report, major reshuffle in the police setup is expected.

A bomb had exploded at the Madinat-ul-Ilm imambargah on May 30. Five people, including two attackers and a policeman, were killed in the suicide attack. Following the explosion, some rioters set the public and private property on fire around NIPA Chowrangi.

Some miscreants set ablaze the KFC outlet, adjacent to the imambargah. The fastfood outlet was gutted and later in the night, the fire brigade found six bodies of the KFC employees, who had been trapped in the fire.
