Karachi faces third power outage in one week

Karachi on Thursday morning faced yet another power outage, the third such blackout experienced by the city within one week.

Taking to Twitter, K-Electric (KE) said that the power outage was caused by tripping in the Extra High Tension (EHT) line.

"Supply from National Grid to the city is off. Restoration work is underway. We will keep you posted on further updates," the tweet added.

KE Spokesperson Adil Murtaza later told DawnNews that the provision of electricity from the National Grid had been completely restored and electricity provision had returned to normal in the city.

Over the course of the week, Karachiites have faced almost daily electricity outages.

On Oct 1, K-Electric tweeted about a power outage that "some parts of Karachi" experienced. During the day, they provided updates about the progress that was made in restoring power to the city.

Similarly, in a statement shared on Twitter on Oct 2, the city's electricity supplier said that "power supply to KE from the national grid is currently restricted due to technical reasons".

About Thursday morning's outage, KE on Twitter said that power supply has been restored in Gulistan-e-Maymar, Jacob Line, North Karachi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Airport, Dhabeji and Gharo pumping stations of the Water Board as well as Civil Hospital, Jinnah Hospital, Sindh Assembly and Governor House.

KE added that electricity in parts of Gulshan, Federal-B area, Liaquatabad and Korangi has also been restored.

KE should hold functions to celebrate this yearly event. The main culprit is none other than humidity which unfortunately is one of a kind of meteorological factor only experienced in Pakistan. Facing such a unique adversary must be acknowledged by the public in general and the government in particular.

@rehan you are mistaken ... After 18th Amendment Power, Gas, Water, Infra, health, Education, Sewage, waster water, Cleaning, local bodies, all come under provincial jurisdiction. Even PTI (Federal) tried to sign an understanding with MQM (khi-Hyderabad Local body), PPP (provincial) jump in and said it is not in there preview and PPP will (not) take care ! Read UP !

@Shah some people does not have a better sport than PPP Bashing. For almost 10 years Musharaf and MQM were in power, did they add a single MegaWatt? you need to ask them first because the shortfall we are witnessing today is because of them as when they rose to power we had sufficient supply. And to answer your question PPP led Sindh Govt in 2015 inaugurated Sindh Nooriabad Power Plant which is supplying electricity to KE. Further for your information, power is not a provincial subject. Hence PPP led Sindh Govt alone can not resolve this issue.

The incompetent rulers from interior Sindh have no ability to address problems of the largest city of the country. They treat Karachi as one of their villages and live in their lavish houses in Defence/Clifton with the money generated by poor people of Karachi.

People of Karachi are living in miserable conditions and although Imran Khan made promises to change the status quo but still the system in Karachi remains intact. We need our own administration and management in Karachi in order to provide services to our residents.

"Supply from National Grid to the city is off." Why K-Electric is not able to generate electricity for the city. They get electricity from national grid which provides electricity to rest of Pakistan on much lower charges than Karachi then K-Electric charges us so high per unit. Are we living outside of Pakistan?

@India there is not shortage of electricity, we are very few KW short of our demand. Power shut down due to technical faults. In few year we will have surplus electricity .

@YK but the PPP is most famously linked to Sindh. And the fact remains that there has been little development in some areas, but stagnation and deterioration in other areas of the Sindh province. If PPP was a valid choice of party then they would have at least outlawed slavery and they would have at least had garbage disposal in Karachi. PPP is a party of crooks.

@Pakistani : The humidity exists in many parts of the World. There are technical solutions to the problem of high tension lines tripping during high humidity. KE and NTDC should jointly adopt a technical solution. And implement the same and further monitor the results to optimize the proposed solution. it is not enough to inform the public and Government that there was a ‘ technical fault’ they should elaborate what was wrong and what has been done to avoid the occurrence. They should or make fool of the public. The CM Sind being an ex WAPDA employee should himself handle the situation and monitor that KE and NTDC should adopt proper technical solution and invest some money in their network to improve the situation. The vulnerable parts or areas of network can be washed hotline in humid periods. Good luck to KE and NTDC.
