LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Chaudhry Sarwar on Wednesday took oath as the 37th governor of Punjab.

Lahore High Court Chief Justice Yawar Ali administered the oath at a ceremony held on the lawns of Governor House.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, army officials, judges, provincial ministers, parliamentarians, politicians, senior bureaucracy, senior doctors and media persons.

Mr Sarwar was nominated as Punjab governor on Aug 10 but he continued holding his position as Senator because party wanted him to poll his vote for Dr Arif Ali, PTI’s presidential candidate.

Soon after the president’s election process completed and results declared, Mr Sarwar resigned from his Senatorship on Tuesday.

Chaudhry Sarwar has sworn in as governor for his second term as he was also appointed governor by the former PML-N government on Aug 5, 2013. However, he had resigned from his job on Jan 29, 2015, after making an anti-government speech.

This time, Sarwar has replaced PML-N’s Rafique Rajwana who had resigned on Aug 15 as the PTI formed its government in the Centre.

The chief minister congratulated Chaudhry Sarwar on becoming governor. “We will jointly serve the masses and transform this country into a Naya Pakistan,” Buzdar said.
