MIRPURKHAS, June 11: Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has said that under the amended Sindh Local Government Ordinance, 2001, the Sindh government is empowered to take action against any local government not working within provisions of the SLGO. Talking to different delegations and journalists at the circuit house here on Saturday, he said the amended SLGO was enforced on June 6 after being signed by the governor.

Replying to a question about the coming local bodies’ election, Dr Rahim hoped that the Pakistan Muslim League would win the polls by forming alliances with coalition partners.

He said the PML was being organized and party chiefs at district and taluka levels had been elected.

On complaints of people, the chief minister suspended Mirpurkhas taluka municipal officer Mumtaz Magsi and said he would be sent to jail if malpractice charges against him were proved.

He said an inspection team would hold an inquiry into affairs of the TMA. He said matters relating to construction of roads between Mirpurkhas and Jhurbi at a cost of Rs17.5 million, fraud in construction of bungalows and flats under schemes of the Hyderabad Development Authority and burning of government record and other irregularities by Liaquat Samejo, executive engineer of the Mirpurkhas highway division, would be investigated.

Answering a question, he said an inquiry was being conducted into allegations of corruption in construction of the Makhi dam.
