Good start.
opportunities for corruption in the auction process
Hope they get a price better than market value. Cars values depriciate fast world-wide
PM Imran Khan whilst taking austerity measures, also plan to generate revenue from all sides. Let us hope him every success.
Great step
Nothing new happened before during Zia era.Its not IK or Zardari anything government will do corruption come into play. Less government less corruptions.
Sold old make money buy new make more money. Simple
How overseas Pakistani can bid on these vehicles?
Sale time so THEY can order newer models. Who cares for a Civic and older models of cars.
I am not interested in bidding for these luxury vehicles.
There will be enough rich PTI activists who would buy these vehicles at rock bottom price in the auction.
I shall wait till the time when Helicopters are auctioned.
That's great - let us know how much the fetch.
Awesome!! Keep up the good work Khan sahab..all positive things should be appreciated.
Bravo IK. After you have auctioned off unnecessary vehicles, find a way that ensures that any PM who gets elected after you does not go back to the way your predecessors lived.
This is not enough. There should be a law that PM can not have more than 2 cars. This will prevent future abuses.
It will be interesting to know who buys those bullet proof ones. Perhaps some top businesses.
Why don't you show 'full blown ' pictures of the cars that are going to be auctioned, so the public can see what their hard earned money was being blown on, by those heartless 'vultures' who were taking the country down the drain.
Looks like all cars lived there life
Lol @ 1994 Hino bus.
Good start....although some are old and non luxary cars...
Quite unsound decision as foreign dignitaries on state visits or some other international events would require these comfortable & bullet proof vehicles...
Why you have to auction the bus... it could be useful.
Individuals taking part should submit their last 5 year tax returns to qualify for the auction.
Good move by the Imran Khan. Let's remove all these show off & red tapes.we are all struggling to have our ends meet how Nawaz Sharif was having such luxury?
Not a step which good name
And how are you going to create 10 million jobs? All the drivers of these vehicles will become jobless now.
Total number of cars??
It looks like he will remain PM for life.
Will be Interesting to see the buyers list . Though will be confidential I am sure .
Great! Long live IK.
And the well connected rich PTI members and the Aliens will buy the valuable cars at a very high discount rate. It is a new scheme to fleece poor Pakistani.
will this auction will be live online i like to bid from Los Angeles,
Auctioning all the old cars...what about those S 600 which Fix it kept mentioning on their face book page?
Excellent. People love this government headed by PM, a true blood Pakistani who is dedicated to the country
@Sachin Arora This is not India
Nothing specials about these cars. Should be sold at market value.
..and all those were used by Nawaz Sharif and family..
@orro Wait..The pictures will be out soon
You may need to keep some of the luxury vehicles for the time being, in case Maulana Fazel Rehman becomes the next president. No Suzuki or Toyota will be acceptable to him.
@Ahmed bin Babar .Good point.. Probably IK never thought about it. Their respective embassies may provide vehicles.
@Maha Mitra These cars were just parked there. Not that every car had its own driver.
@anwarsher Are you giving an idea to the PTIs members ?. If you are MLN supporter, tell us why NS needed all these cars.
Its a hasty move, need to rethink if these cars would fetch better price? Whats the actual vehicles requirement going forth and what were they previously used for (foreign delegates/dignitaries etc.) May be some vehicles would be better to keep.
This auction reminds me the time of slavery...when slaves were traded.in the market...in this particular case this auction is the symbol of the corruption that enslaved the entire nation...If fighting corruption and lavish life style is sure to result in victory, than you must fight, even though the ruler forbid it; if fighting will not result in victory, then you must not fight even at the ruler's bidding.
Hope the auction process is fair and transparent and vehicles are not got rid of at give away price.
Appreciate it.
Sounds like a routine disposal of some old equipment. I do not see anything extraordinary about it. Anyone heard of the simple net present value NPV..its a publicity stunt
All will be auctioned in managed auction and their own people will but it. Later they will buy new vehicles. Instead if they were really surplus then would had been shared with president or other ministers, etc. instead of auctioning to their own people.
It should be open and fair auction. Live media coverage during auction. Buyers must disclose their income tax return before purchasing, prohibite all PTI and allied workers and their families to buying those cars.
These are prestigious and valuable cars because in past under PMS so double value. Approximate 20 carros + should be collected.
Build 20 semi governmnt schools on government land.
50% funds by private and 50% government to build. 100 years lease to run school independently without gov interference. With this money gov can create 500 to 700 jobs immediately.
Some argue that it is the symbolic value of this auction that balances the scale. A resounding statement announcing the era of simplicity by offloading expensive creature comforts shall set the tone for future monetary policy. However, the opposing argument that this auction is akin to ‘selling the family silver’ is an equally defensible narrative. At the end of the one thing is clear, the sale of these cars shall make the same amount of difference in the National kitty that a raindrop makes in the ocean.
@Maha Mitra Do you really think these drivers need a job? They might already have earned enough, to be able to start a respectable business.
@hani WHY are NS people so negative!!
@Ahmed bin Babar Those who are in need actually bring their own cars.
@Jay Shah : PM can not make law. Parliament should formulate a bill and get it approve.
Seems more like optics than something meaningful. Hopefully PTI is sincere enough to declare the amount recovered from auction. Looks more like opportunity given to PTI inner circle to buy these vehicles at literally scrap price.
PM may not need but the Government may need. Selling these government vehicles and purchasing again will cost much more. It seems to be not austerity, but show of austerity.
Ya and new halicopters will be bought
@Khan then no car can be sold all are poor people they buy expensive cars
I hope the "Reserve" or "minimum" or "base starting" price has been fixed??
@hani How, experts determine minimum price for sale, which no one can refute. People make a bid, if above minimum, then sell to highest bidder. Money into treasury department, to pay for education and health care of poor.
There would be very few persons with white money sufficient to buy these expensive vehicles. Couldn't these be sent to our embassies abroad? Why should these be roaming on our roads?
Issue independent contracts to transport companies at big airports. So they provide luxuries and bullets proof cars.
when any foreign delegates coming for visit than hire cars from them.
Gov will save drivers salary, servicing, fuel and depreciation To maintain a SUV Annually: 13000$ fuel depends running and fuel type Driver pay: 14000$ Service: 5000$ Depreciation: 5000 to 8000$
So total annually cost to keep one luxurious SUV 37,000$
It is good decision to liquidate unwanted vehicles, but question is that who requires these high value bullet proof vehicles in general public? This is a matter of concern.
@ city dweller Eight BMW and Mercedes Maybach are of 2018 model
It would be better to make the PM house a museum and show the luxurious lifestyle of our politicians to the public. The cars could be placed there and then sold later.
These will be bid for and bought by people with black money stashed away.
Auction prices and successful bidders may also be circulated to avoid any wrong doing or favourites...
@Socrates No jealousy pls
It seems pti is busy with optics rather than core issues. These are trivial matters which are much touted by the information minister. And still they are focusing on what the previous govt did. Yes we all know now. What are YOU going to do? We want to know THAT.
Look at the OLD Models Now new rulers need LATEST Models
Why the 1994 hino bus would be of interest to anyone - Back in the day they used proper metal bodies, so although very heavy, being bullet proof, it would be like a lightly armoured vehicle for any company that would like to provide secure transit to its staff. Probably Japanese of make, in 90s Japan made some of the best vehicles ever. Government of Islamabad vehicle so likely to have been maintained with the best of imported replacement parts and fluids. Not likely to have much milage on it since there was more premium mode of transportation readily available. I don't have the money for it, or a place to park it, but I'd have been very interested in getting my hands on the 1994 Hino bus... The lucky one will get it
Hopefully INSHALLAH such efforts may endure
good but should not be optics. major austerity require in defence spending
Good Start.
I don’t think there is anything particularly special and luxurious about cars which are 3-24 yrs old. Since when did three Suzuki’s and a Hino bus become luxury. A Honda Civic and Toyota do not sound that exotic and luxurious to be honest. They are quite common cars in Pakistan. The money fetched from the cars will basically be peanuts in the bigger scheme of things. I support Imran Khan ; but can we please become serious and do away with the political stunts and get on with business for which the Pakistani public voted him in.
This along will not work, plz focus on the core issues
WHat the brand new ones ( worth 18 crore each)delivered just a week ago
How much money saving for this selling. Next time will buy new car for the government. It's austenite ?
Imran Khan model of austerity. Selling off luxury cars and use Helicopters in its place !!!!! It happens only in Pakistan !!
Shouldn't PML-Ns die hards bid higher and higher prices for these precious vehicles. They belong to their beloved leader, after all.
@Ahmed I think mostly will buy by PTI rich activist in a low prices of course which is the main reason if this auction...PTI playing smartly
@hani They need to start somewhere. You cannot stop just because there are opportunities of corruption.
Auction with Imran Khan's signatures, InshaAllah public will pay more then the actual price. These will be collectable for ever. Pakistan Zindabad.
Every year more than 20 cars are auctioned from the prime minister and president house. So how this is a new news?. There is a general process of auction of old cars. All 4-5 years old cars were always auctioned even by the previous governments.
A link to the advertisement must be provided here by Dawn for the convenience of readers
White or Black Money. No Cash Sales Allowed. Disclose Buyers names Plus. Blue Book Value, Sales Tax. Mileage on the Autos.Year Date and Model - Features of the Autos.Buyer must be a Tax Payer.
Pakistan is one country that the car prices don't depreciate. But it is not what these cars fetch. It should be un written law that cars don't come with most government jobs, apart from certain sector of the government.
@hani lol , you have corrupted mind otherwise this type of Thinking is impossible in clean mind
the houses of NS and his family must be auctioned also!!!
These are not 79 what happened to others that IK talked about? Or was it just another exaggeration?
When are admissions going to start in PM house university?
Focus on defense spending from there real gain can come
Will the people buying need to show their tax returns or that is meant for money lying abroad only.
Use the proceeds to build schools for poor kids, in every province, except Punjab. That will send a strong message to PML-N and its supporters who got robbed all those years, but blindly followed NS and showered the family with rose petals everywhere, even when their own kids could not afford school fees.
@City dweller You are right, selling them is irrelevant.
it could just be a publicity stunt - and afterwards they say 'oh, actually for security reasons etc etc, we need x number of cars, and newer ones with better facilities'
Such publicity acts won't make a difference...IK already started using a helicopter from Islamabad to Bani Gala - as he doesn't want to inconvenience the public (or in other words, he doesn't want to be stuck in traffic).
The proof will be in big projects, IMF, CPEC, Dams, Road, Infrastructure, Education, Gas, Electricity etc......anyone can sell some cars - and get his rich backers to buy new ones.
The real issue is in tackling the big problems the country faces....not quick populist measures.
That said, as a non-IK supporter, (in fact I have no political affiliation whatsoever), I do wish him well.
Let's hope he can deliver on the many many promises he has made.
Need to replace them with 2018 models.
He is most certainly Pakistan's Kejiriwal. Time will expose his true colors. BTW: how much do you think these auctions will fetch? Its just a matter of time, the office buys news ones due to 'security reasons'
I hope money collected will go to State Bank Pakistan.
Why new model cars are not on auction?
Kindly inform about the approximate revenue generated through this auction.
Although its financial contribution towards our present financial woes are tentamount to peanuts, but the event carries historical implications - saying goodbye to our colonial style extravaganza adopted by our past rulers balatantly at the cost of the country in which 40% of the population is forced to live below poverty, scavenging to feed themselves & their families a single meal a day.It is heartening to learn that the new government took no time to expose oppulent living style of our privilege class, hardly making 5% of the total population, at the cost of remaining having no access to clean water, education, health & employment facilities to begin with. Having done away with this symbol of naked kleptocracy, the people of this country should feel encouraged & assured that whatever and wherever the hurdles to their emancipation from misery & deprivation are, at least the present government is honestly striving to erase it for their benefit & wellbeing by starting from the very top
Salute to Khan Sahib
The rich businessmen in Imran's government will buy these bullet proof cars for cheap. Good deal.
@JD Give it to Shireen Mazari.
Great move. What else is called "change" in the corridors of power at Islamabaf?
A step in the right direction Mr.PM.
What about the luxury vehicles in use at the president's residence and those with the provincial governments? No policy made for the same?
@Jay Shah it's not the law that prevents crimes of corruption necessarily,we already have many laws to curb corruption but people take the risk to break them to make a quick buck. It is sadly part of our DNA, the only way things wiĺ change is the economics of the country and put in power people whose hearts and minds are focused on bettering our country, like IK clearly is!
I believe Government of Pakistan have purchased these luxury cars in dollars. It would be better to auction these luxury cars in dollars not in Pak Rupee.
Good job.
PML(N) supporters always claim that Nawaz paid for all the expenses of the PM house. Can they shed light if these luxury cars were bought by him with his money? What were they thinking when these cars were bought? It was shear waste of tax payers money. We hope the total money is recovered plus some.
So, if a VIP from other country comes to Pakistan then he will be offered Suzuki Mehran.
I will bid when Karachi is being sold.
I an coming to Pakistan to buy one of the Mercedes
Auction should be open and transparent so no one have any objection. PTI is on the right track.
This is how govt will generate revenue and avoid IMF bailout?
Continue your sacred fight till the end. The nation stands behind you.
Please impose ban on the use of such costly vehicles so that the riches do not exploit poor Pakistanis.
Deal with Suzuki Mehran, Mr PM?
From the other side of the border Salaam to Khan Sahib.
Why not to cut these vehicles into pieces and sell the scrape to KABAARI?
Sell it abroad and get some foreign exchange.
Sell it abroad and get foreign exchange. Add premium price for ' Pakistan ex Prime Ministers protocol cars -Nawaz Sharif. Markets in Dubai, Russia, Saudi, Pakistani expatriates world wide
Should get $20 million
Why sell the cars that have already been paid for and then in the name of security use other more expensive means like helicopter or planes? Why not keep the bullet proof cars so they can be used when needed? I have great expectations from IK but he needs to really think about his actions. He has given the awaam a voice which they are now not afraid to use. Similarly he should also move from Bani gala. He needs security and that’s creating a problem for other residents there.
I will buy the SUV on certain conditions
I read a news in India PM Imran Khan going to the office by Helicopter and some ministers said it cost Rs.55/- PKR only comparing VIP security cars and other expenses !!!! Is it true ?
PM house Expenses. Multiparty 7 member commission should be formed to come up with a proposal to establish: 1. House hold total budget 2 # of staff 3. # of cars, what kind, helicopter etc. Transportation need A law should be passed to control , otherwise next KING mentality PM will reverse
Need permanent change under Law
Not a good decision. , what's there should not be replaced how much can they make selling old cars
Old stock is being got rid of so that when new government comes it buys new ones. This is Mere a show off, not a genuine fiscal reform. Cutting down two trillion budget deficit is far serious issue then these public consumption stories.
Rajpar Washington DC
All govt ministers and bureacrats must be debarred from auction. These vehicles must be auctioned genuinely and not to be sold in price of rickshaws to ministers
There are two S600 Maybach in the lot. With bullet proofing they cost around $500,000. I wonder what will be the sale price of those. I wish Dawn will print the auction details.
@Tanweer Khan what a negative thinking
Chance for the well connected Pakistanis to buy these vehicles at throw away prices.
Another opportunity for the rich to get their hands on these luxuries for less.
Make a note, all these cars were at the PM house, in total, I think I counted 38 cars,SUV's and a bus. And all of them for one person, must have been a very special guy.
If IK is asking for austerity, who would buy these expensive cars???
Reduce expenditure on Pak army which is staggering 26% of our GDP. No nation spends that high amount on their army.
Sale! Sale! Sale! Good going PTI!
This is not way to solve problems. As a nation u already wasted money and u cant tecover..put these to proper use. PM security is important else chaos happens which is not good for common man.
European cars drop in value like a rock because they cost a fortune to maintain past 100K miles anyway.
Great move, Kaptan. Go all the way
First auction them at rock bottom prices to your own people, then purchase new and costlier ones with kickbacks in the name of necessary security. All in the name of austerity and honesty. Awesome strategy :)
Guys, don't be excited with the news, may be conditions are gone so bad that to keep the country running and to pay loans etc. we have to start auctioning things, like a poor person starts selling his dishes to meet both ends meet, recently there was a news that govt. is banning business class travel by leaders and VIPS to save a few rupees, not a good sign.
A boon for the billionaires. Only they can afford these limousines, many of them ' protected ' i.e. bullet-proof.
This is a condition, cars are selling positions? There will be no benefit from this, but at-least PM is admitting, the condition of the country is not good...
Don't be so naive to believe that the new PM doesn't need them . Why should he ride in old cars once used by Nawaz? He will order 2018 model modern cars ..Dekhte jaao
This is a bad idea, because when the next government comes they may decide to buy all new fleet at a higher price.
I can see a lot of cultus and mehran in the list. While pm is busy in saving public tax money by taking a ride from his official residence to bani galla, he should hav set an example by commuting in cultus and mehran.
@orro Just make sure the price is Fair Market Value, and cars are not auctioned off below FMV to PM's friends, relatives or PTI workers.
Great job Imran. Bring down the culture of imperialism. For too long the people of Pakistan have been treated as slaves. Let everybody work hard and make Pakistan Naya Pakistan. Public has to understand its not one person or community its the whole nation. We all have a duty towards Pakistan. You Pakistanis are also held accountable.
Amazing work
In an open auction, opportunities for corruption are minimal. The safegurd is to set the reserve price apprporiately, and the right to reject the highest bid if that is below the reserve price.
It should be an online auction that anyone within the country or abroad can buy and the procedure could be believed as transparent..
Great start
@hani , Let us hope there is no corruption ,be positive
@Maria enteparia onnuchoriu And that would not look very good on their part. So don't worry about that.
@SUMAIRA Not in Pakistan. They stay the same over decades.
Even a rich country cannot afford to purchase all those cars except Arab nations. Good decision by the government but idea of helicopter using by PM is also a bad one.
@SUMAIRA How can the vehicles can get better price from the market? Why would someone buy from auction? It is simple to get better price from the market, simple rule, please try to understand.
@hani We as a Pakistani lived in a corrupt society for almost 70 years, please let them work peacefully, and have a high hope in IK.
Why vehicles of PM house, how about other such luxury vehicles used by ministry of defense and judiciary.
why not just sell them than auctioning.
These cars should be sold as a token of prestige as they have been used by dignitaries. Just like a bat sold that has been used by a famous cricketer brings more money than just a bat sold as a bat.
Now people will criticize that cars were sold for less, causing loss to Pakistan's treasury OR cars were sold to close PTI supporters activists... Guys.. its public auction, go buy for less if you want!!
@hani
Noon League and PPP aren't the ones conducting the auction
How much di Govt pay to media houses advertise in the local Press?
I hope there'd be enough bidding participants and I wish that the vehicles aren't auctioned and tendered to their favorite ones.
What was net the price of these vehicles.....were they purchased in mushraff's era??
@SUMAIRA Yes your are absolutely right... IK will sale these car far more than market value and people will buy very hapily as they know IK will not use a single penny for himself. And all funds will be used in the interest of general public.
