RAWALPINDI: Mayors of all of Punjab’s cities will visit Adiala jail today (Thursday) to express solidarity with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

They will also attempt to meet with Sharif and Maryam, as well as other detained PML-N leaders retired Capt Mohammad Safdar and Hanif Abbasi.

Rawalpindi mayor and PML-N Metropolitan president Sardar Naseem told Dawn mayors who have been elected by the PML-N in all of Punjab’s cities will be visiting Adiala jail, where they will lay floral wreaths outside the jail and ask jail authorities for permission to meet with Sharif and Maryam.

Mr Naseem said a mayors’ conference will also be held in the city after the Adiala visit to devise a future line of action to tackle political challenges facing the PML-N since its leadership has been detained.

The time and venue of the conference will be decided later, he added.

Sharif, Maryam and her husband Safdar were convicted in the Avenfield reference by an accountability court that has sentenced them to 10, seven and one year in prison respectively. PML-N candidate in NA-60, Hanif Abbasi, was sentenced to life in prison by a Control of Narcotics Substances court in the ephedrine case.
