LARKANA, June 6: The district council on Saturday termed amendments to the Sindh Local Government Ordinance uncalled-for and rejected the proposed appointment of administrators in place of district, taluka and union council nazims. Tabling a resolution, Badar Abbasi doubted the government’s claim of holding fair and impartial polls and said if the rulers were so sincere in observing transparency in elections, they should step down and contest polls with caretakers from the higher judiciary at the helm.

Supporting the point Amir Bakhsh Gaad, Ayoub Ansari, Muhib Pirzado, Athar Solangi, Nabi Bakhsh Malgani, Safdar Mithani, Manzoor Chandio, Khair Mohammed Shaikh and Barkat Shaikh criticized the government for amendments.

They said it was a well-calculated move for gerrymandering and the amendments would be a big blow to the devolution plan.

They criticized the Sindh chief minister and his coalition partners for not only destroying peace in Sindh’s capital city and preparing for, what they called, massive rigging in the next polls.

The session unanimously passed the resolution and said if the government was sincere in holding fair and free local government election then it should step down and the chief justice of the Sindh High Court be entrusted to conduct the elections.

The resolution said simply removing nazims and appointment of administrators would be clear signal of rigging in the elections.
