KARACHI, June 5: Jockey M. Manzoor and riding boy Mohammad Essa, stole the limelight at the Karachi Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting, when each piloted home a brace of winners on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Racecourse. Manzoor had his winners in the opening event, coming from behind astride Ladla and beating front runner Sea Biscuit by one and half lengths. Quite Arrival grabbed the third spot from Jallali.

Later in the sixth event, Manzoor scored his second winner astride Bahar-e-Arab, beating the raging favourite Sarazen by one and quarter lengths.

Teenager Mohammad Essa, had his moments of glory in the fourth event, guiding Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s chestnut filly Patricia to her second straight triumph, outpacing Arabian Queen by two and half lengths. Sonia came in with a burst from behind to book the third berth with Haseena-e-Arab ridden by Ghulam Shabbir II finishing a bad fourth.

Getting back into the saddle in the very next race, Essa had an arm-chair victory aboard Leopard, making it two winners in a row for owner Haji Khuda Bux Rajwar, after the bay three-year-old colt beat nearest rival Fantastic Again by a huge margin of 12 ½ lengths with plenty to spare. In another interesting afternoon enjoyed by all and sundry thanks to the racing Administration, Tag Team, trailing the field and finishing off the board only last week, ran an absolute different race to beat the fancied runner Silent Love in the second event.

Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s four-year-old bay colt Canon Ball with the evergreen S. Khan in the saddle, won the fourth race like a champion, after Jaguar tried runaway tactics. Leo Again chased the winner throughout the race but could not get his head in front.

Sardar Abdul Aziz’s chestnut horse Welcome Pachino smartly ridden by Waheed Baran and trained by Cajetan Colaco, finished third after Jaguar fading out in the straight tried to upset the chestnut horse‘s progress for coming in third. Lucky there was no collision as both riders and horses would have fallen heavily on the track with some fatal results.

Rider Pervaiz Ali was indeed lucky for not being fined for his dangerous riding.

In the concluding event, Syed Hassan Ali’s four-year-old bay colt Sculptor ridden by Ghulam Shabbir II, ended the pretensions of Shore Footed, beating the bay colt quite easily going over six furlongs, followed home by Donatello and Rahil Jan.

The race with only six runners in the reckoning, saw Murtaza’s Hussain’s prized dark bay horse Fast And Furious fall during the race bringing down jockey Arshad heavily on the turf. The next race meeting will be held on Sunday, June 12.
