PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif has met with ulema belonging to various schools of thought to secure their support for the upcoming elections.

During the meeting, Shahbaz recalled the times he used to accompany his late father to religious gatherings and how, as a result, he had gained much insight.

"The purpose of founding Pakistan was to free ourselves from imperialism and 'Hindu slavery' and institute a system of justice. Pakistan was created to establish an Islamic welfare society," he exclaimed at one point, calling attention to how the country has regressed rather than progressed in the decades since Independence.

"By God, my aim is not to rule," he said, reminding his audience of the "blood and sweat" he has put into serving the nation.

"My only desire and struggle is to do for Pakistan whatever I can in my capacity," he added.

The scholars announced their support for the PML-N and expressed solidarity with the incarcerated Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam.
