Grand alliance soon: Jhagra

Published June 1, 2005

LAHORE, May 31: ARD Secretary-General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra hopes that a grand opposition alliance will come into existence in the near future. Talking to reporters on Tuesday, he said the government had failed on all fronts and now opposition parties were left with no option, but to join hands. The opposition parties would pressure the government to hold fresh elections at the earliest, he added.

The ARD leader said the law and order situation was slipping out of the control of the rulers. He said several incidents had taken place during the past few days, which manifested the inability of the rulers to deal with the situation.

In his opinion a democratic setup, which was the product of fresh polls, would be in a better position to solve people’s problems and steer the country out of difficulties.

Answering a question, he said he would hold consultations with ARD chairman Makhdoom Amin to call a meeting of the alliance at the earliest.

Punjab PML-N chief organizer Zulfikar Khosa said in a statement that APHC leader Syed Ali Geelani had refused to visit Pakistan as a mark of protest against the policies of the present government.

PPP MEETING: Meanwhile, Punjab PPP President Qasim Zia has called a meeting of the provincial executive committee for Saturday (June 4) at the party secretariat to discuss political situation.
