PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advocate General Abdul Lateef Yousafzai has resigned after around five years on the job.

Mr Yousafzai, an advocate in the Supreme Court, submitted his resignation to KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra on Sunday. He was appointed by the former Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government in Sept 2013.

“I was appointed as Advocate General by the government which has completed its tenure, and the caretaker set-up has taken over the charge for holding fresh elections. I, therefore, tender my resignation with immediate effect,” a handwritten letter addressed to the KP governor said.

Among legal circles Mr Yousafzai is regarded as a competent lawyer. He defended the KP government in a number of high-profile cases, especially on petitions challenging the enactment of the Ehtesab Commission Act, 2014, and the KP Medical Teaching Institutions Reforms Act, 2015.

According to sources, he had been in Karachi over the last couple of days to attend to family matters and submitted his resignation soon after arriving in Peshawar on Sunday.

The sources claim that Abdul Samad Khan, a senior advocate, is likely to replace Mr Yousafzai.
