A man who allegedly shot and killed a woman in Faisalabad on June 9 for refusing a marriage proposal was remanded into police custody for four days.
Bus hostess Mahwish Arshad was shot and killed by Umer Daraz, a security guard working for the same company as her, allegedly for repeatedly refusing his marriage proposal.
Police, in a first investigation report registered in the woman's father's name, said that Umer Daraz used to earlier work with 19-year-old Mahwish in a different travel company. According to the FIR, Umer Daraz pressured the bus hostess to marry him and the latter repeatedly refused the offer.
A video of Mahwish and Umer Daraz exchanging heated words, in which the latter is seen forcefully gripping her wrists and trying to attack her during a bus ride, made rounds on social media after the girl was shot and killed later that night.
In the video, Umer Daraz can be heard threatening Mahwish and saying, "You'll see what I would do when you get to the [bus] terminal."
A CCTV clip attached to the footage shows Mahwish climbing the steps of a building at what seems to be a deserted bus terminal when a man yanks her arm to turn her around.
Mahwish is seen trying to free herself from his clutches before she is shot and left bleeding at the steps.
According to the FIR, Mahwish's assailant fled the scene and she lost her life while undergoing treatment at a local hospital after she was shifted there.
The police arrested Umer Daraz on the night of the murder and claims that the suspect has confessed to committing the crime.
On Monday (today), police produced Umer Daraz before a district magistrate in Faisalabad and procured his four-day physical remand. The police had initially asked for a 10-day remand.

The video shown on the media indicates that other people present in the bus did not take any action against the attacker when he attacked the bus hostess. The result would have been different if the attacker was apprehenderd by the people and taken to the police.

Most of the time the violence against women, has to do with a wrong idea of honour.

That poor little girl who is driving around to earn a few rupees, just wanted to have peace in there life.

But that security guard felt hurt in his so called "honour".
Pakistani man has here in the west a very bad reputation, especially because of the way they treat women.
Many of the pakistani girls, who are here as exchange students, fall in love with an austrian man.
They have sex and just enjoy the life here. And would even like to marry there non muslim partner.
In pakistan nowbody knows about there relationships. They have to hide it and feel a lot of pressure.
Just let them live their lives. And change you concept of honour.

This sad incident reminds me of an opportunity I had, a decade ago, to teach MBAs at a leading university in Pakistan about sexual harassment at workplace (against men and women). In my class, female students said that their 'Law' professor engaged in acts of (sexual) harassment. And interestingly, that leading business school had NO policy on (sexual) harassment. This example of mine and the sad incident in Faisalabad clearly show how myopic organizations and institutions are when it comes workplace policies. Everyone focuses on money and customer service with no regard to safety of employees. Hope this guy gets exemplary punishment. And as for that business school's law teacher, he ended up contesting elections in 2014. Do you see the state of affairs in Pakistan?

1: Men are "INCHARGE/GUARDIAN" over women.
2: Women are supposed to be dependent on them.
3: And most importantly, women need to take consent from men for ANY decision they make about their life (even for stepping out of the hosue)

Dawn,thank you for actually highlighting this issue. It is sad to see that the man like these are still out there. 4 day remand , 10 day remand will not do any justice. Innocent soul has departed. We as men should be the protector for the women not this. Its pain full , its extremely sad.

Pitiable is not just this act, but, more so, the failure of passengers to intervene to teach this criminal a lesson on how perpetrators of violence against women will be dealt with. Shame on all the male passengers who lacked the courage to stand against a single bully. It is the saddest thing I have watched in a long time. Bus driver must be fired as well.

continued. Such cases need to be tried as a speedy trial. The accused should be given full opportunity to prove him/herself innocent if in fact is innocent. But if the evidence is reputable, prove beyond doubt. Then he/she should not be able to play with the system.
Like the developing countries the judge should set a date for trial giving time to both the defense and prosecutor. Once the date is set then it should not be postponed with one or another reason. It should continue and be finished within the reasonable time.No one should, those involve with the case should go on leave etc until the
case is over. Unlike the panama.

@Faizal There is nothing in Sharia that says women must accept any / every proposal. To the contrary, there are clauses requiring thefree and wiling consent of both parties. This violent murderer's inability to accept rejection, just proves how right she was to reject such a beast.

People saying she should have reported the harassment should answer these questions. 1. What makes you think she didn't report it to her workplace? 2. You do know what happens when you report a man for harassment right? Haven't we seen enough women attacked for reporting harassment that we still don't know why women barely ever report such incidents?
The fact is to us Pakistanis, only a dead woman is a good woman. If Mahwish was alive and had reported the harassment, everyone would have called her a liar and an attention seeker.

It is a common problem workdwide - except perhaps Scandinavia.
Solution is for mothers [also fathers] to ‘train’ the sons to treat women respectfully. The real problem is the way men treat their wives - and the boys see it, and then repeat the behavior.

Firstly, a woman is not anyone's property.She is a human being and is to be treated with respect.
Secondly, are men such as this so hard up for a partner that they have to resort to violence to try and force the woman to love them? And then murder the woman just because she makes it clear that she's nor interested? Self respect and respect for human life and dignity are sadly
lacking. There must be no pardon. A human life

Unfortunately murders based on this form of sick deluded belief of ownership over a woman occurs in western societies as well. The punishment should be appropriate to the crime. I am against the death penalty, but to be fair it seems it would be entirely appropriate in this case. In the UK he would get life with a minimum term of 30 or more because he used a gun. It would be life with minimum term of 25 if he had used a knife. Awful crime on a beautiful woman who had so much to live for. Pakistan must focus on highlighting and eradicating this inhumanity to women in their midst.

The crux of the problem is that leaving beside 15% of our urban educated class, majority of our men belonging to illiterate and ignorant class do not accept equal rights of our women in society. On top of this, they look down upon working women who in these difficult times, choose to become a bread winner for their poor and miserable families. The only way out of this male chauvinistic attitude is to provide education to these swarming illiterate among us in order to make them aware of the equale rights of our women who are sisters, daughters and mothers too, as per aspiration of the constitution of Pakistan.

I fully agree. The Bus company is fully accountable. It would be desireable to review its hiring practices. When such threats to employees are apparent a policy should be in place to provide safe transport and a legal cover to employees . It is sad to note that nobody cared enough to offer at least verbal support while the accused was threatening her. The security guard instead of guarding the interests of the company used his weapon against the company own employee. Justice should be exemplary and quickly enforced .And the consequences reported by Dawn. Too often the public is deprived of follow up action.
