RAWALPINDI: A senior traffic warden and pedestrian were shot and killed allegedly by a motorist who was stopped by the warden for a traffic violation at Alam Khan Chowk on Wednesday.

The suspect attempted to escape but was caught by a police official who was patrolling nearby at Committee Chowk.

Traffic warden Sub-Inspector Shahid Sarwar, who had been deployed at Committee Chowk, signaled a driver to stop because he was coming from the wrong side.

The police said when the driver was stopped, he exited the vehicle and began arguing with the warden.

He allegedly pulled a 12-bore gun out of the car and opened fire, first shooting a pedestrian identified as Nisar Ahmed and then the warden.

Ahmed, a tailor by profession, was killed on the spot while Sarwar was critically injured and died upon reaching District Headquarters Hospital.

City Police Officer Afzal Kausar told Dawn the suspected shooter has been identified as Raid Daud, a resident of Kirpa village.

The suspect has been arrested and the alleged murder weapon has been recovered, he said.

He added that the suspect is a property dealer who has confessed to the shooting.
