This demand comes from our editors in Dawn's editorial today. The problems, of course, extend beyond the nascent digital sphere: established newspapers and media houses have long faced state censorship and recent trends aren't any encouraging:
Illicit interventions also extend to print media, where a proliferation of abstruse ‘red lines’ and disruptions of newspaper distribution are fast becoming the new normal.
As the editorial reminds us, the PML-N in its recently ended tenure failed to enact a journalists' protection law that it had pledged.
As for the upcoming government, our editors hope "for a government with the foresight and fortitude to cultivate the people’s greatest power — their voices."
