ELECTIONS are considered a tool for change. In Europe, new cabinets give relief to their people by ensuring best education, health and security. But in Pakistan, political leaders deceive the people by making tall claims before elections. But once they come to power, they serve only their vested interests.

More than 60 per cent of the masses live below the poverty line. Several reports reveal that poverty forces people to sell their children.

Pakistan’s education sector is pathetic. The Economic Survey of Pakistan revealed that Pakistan’s literacy rate has declined from 60pc to 58pc. In the 2017-18 budget, the government allocated only Rs902.7 billion, which is rather low.

Hospitals are overcrowded and there is a severe dearth of doctors. Most healthcare centres have poor infrastructure and lack basic facilities. People die in hospitals owing to paucity of medical aid and doctors.

The elections are not a panacea to these problems. Corruption and nepotism are the main hurdles, for they do not let Pakistan progress. Corruption should be eliminated otherwise having elections will be a futile exercise.
