The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has convened a consultative meeting of all parliamentary parties on May 31 to finalise the code of conduct for the 2018 general elections.

The ECP has already issued invitation letters to all concerned parties. The commission also dispatched copies of the proposed code of conduct to political parties, read a statement issued on Friday. "The meeting will be held on May 31," it read.

Take a look: The caretaker government: Why do we have one and what purpose does it fulfil?

The term of the incumbent government expires on May 31, after which the caretaker set-up will be put in place to hold elections which are expected to be held in July.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Khursheed Shah recently held several meetings to deliberate upon the caretaker prime minister. The two sides, however, failed to reach a consensus as yet.

The ECP has already warned that if the government and the opposition failed to reach an agreement on the name of a caretaker prime minister, a bipartisan committee of lawmakers will be created to resolve the matter. If that committee is also unsuccessful, the matter will be referred to the ECP, which will then pick a name of its own liking.
