SAHIWAL: Both units of the Qadirabad coal-fired power plant have started generating electricity.

Sources close to the development told Dawn on Tuesday both power plants started production to their full 1,320MW capacity on Tuesday.

The two power plants of 660MW each had stopped operation after a massive power breakdown on May 16. It is said the breakdown generated some technical problems in the plants which have been removed.

PROBE: Commissioner Ali Bahadur Qazi formed on Tuesday a six-member team to probe into the usage of low-quality paper for answer sheets in matric and intermediate exams of the Sahiwal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education.

The body, headed by Local Government Director Qari Kahlid Nazir, will look into public complaints regrading the low quality papers. The board bought 1.1 million and 500,000 answer sheets of 68 gram paper with 24 pages each for matric and intermediate examinations.

Board secretary Zulfiqar, however, said the allegation leveled in a mobile video regarding the poor quality paper were baseless.

He said the Sahiwal board’s bidding for the purchase of answer sheets was the second lowest among nine boards of the Punjab. He said that before making payments to the contractors, a paper quality report was also sought from the PCSIR in Lahore. He said Rs7.97 was spent on each answer book.

Pir Maher Moeenuddin Chishti joined the Pakistan Tehrik Insaf (PTI) in a meeting with PTI leader Jahangir Tareen in the presence of Syed Moeenul Haq Gilani at Golra Sharif.

Pir Moeen contested the 2008 elections on a PPP ticket for PP-228, and secured 15,614 votes. Now, he will contest election for PP-192.

ACCIDENT: Two youth riding a motorcycle were killed in a accident at Chichawatni Bypass on Lahore-Multan Road on Tuesday. Ahmed (16) and Adnan (18), both of Gulistan Colony, died when their motorcycle was struck with a truck.

The Chichawatni Sadar Police shifted the bodies to the Chichawatni Tehsil Headquarters hospital for autopsy. Police arrested the driver and impounded the the truck.
