Zuhair wins U-13 title

KARACHI, May 24: Zuhair Raza was crowned the boys under-13 tennis champion, when he beat Omar Shahid, a lad from St Patrick’s High School 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Greener Pakistan National hard court tennis championship held on Tuesday at the Karachi Gymkhana ground.

After both players were locked 2-2 in the first set, Zuhair playing some fine tennis broke away to win the opener 6-2.

In the next set Omar broke Zuhair’s service not once, or twice but three times, but on each occasion Zuhair unruffled with the situation, returned the compliments with the scores on even keel at 3-3.

Then with some fine cross court shots which caught Omar on the wrong foot, saw Zuhair go on to win the second set and match 6-3.

Following were the other final results:

Men’s singles: Aqeel Khan beat Asim Shafiq (Islamabad) 7-5, 7-6 (7-4)

Boys under-17 singles: Tanveer Ashiq (Lahore) beat Yasir Khan 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Boys under-13: Zuhair Raza beat Omar Shahid 6-2, 6-3.

Ladies singles: Seher Khwaja beat Sana Bhagat 6-0, 7-5.

Girls singles: Quratul Ain beat Mahak Tanveer 6-0, 6-0.

Men’s doubles: Aqeel Khan and Jalil Khan beat Asim Shafiq and Shehzad Khan (Islamabad) 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.

Mixed doubles: Shahid Khan (Faisalabad) and Farha Waseem beat Jalil Khan and Seher Khwaja 6-4, 6-3.
