GUJRANWALA, May 23: The main suspect in rape of over half a dozen minor girls committed suicide here on Monday evening when a police party intercepted him near Government College for Boys, Satellite Town. Reports said alleged rapist identified as Asif Sindhu was carrying a minor girl, Sidra, of Usman Park by his bicycle. Near the cycle stand of the college, police in civvies intercepted him. Suddenly, he took out his pistol and shot himself dead. Police handed over the girl to her parents.

Earlier, DPO Arif Mushtaq at a briefing on Monday had announced a cash award of Rs100,000 for the person who will lead to the arrest of the alleged rapist and constituted 10 raiding and investigation teams.

He said the police had prepared the sketch of the main suspect and displayed it at 4,000 places in the city.

Around seven or eight minor girls were reportedly raped in different localities during the last one and a half months.

NOMINATED: The home department on Monday nominated MNA Chaudhry Bilal Ijaz, MPAs Ms Shagufta Anwer and Engineer Muhammad Ashraf Butt as members of district public safety and police complaints commission.

BAIL: A local anti terrorism court accepted the bail application of two PPP activists Raza Mohiauddin and Shahzad Mohiauddin, both brothers, in the Asif Ali Zardari reception case.

Kharian police had arrested them on April 16 when they were on their way to Lahore to receive their leader in violation of section 144.

FOUND DEAD: An elderly trader missing for the last five days was found murdered. Police recovered his body from a drain near Qila Dedar Singh on Monday.

Abdul Shakoor’s body was spotted by passers-by who informed police.
