SARGODHA, May 19: Police on Wednesday registered a case against some men and women who allegedly provided arms and cell phone to Azam Kurar and his accomplices during their meeting with them. A jail guard requesting anonymity told Dawn that the visitors had been handed over to police.

Another security guard alleged that the prison officials were involved in the jailbreak attempt and they might have killed Azam who sustained serious bullet injuries during the shootout.

Some people present in front of the main gate of the district jail told a group of journalists that the jail employees were allegedly receiving money from Azam Kurar as he was enjoying facilities and contacting his accomplices who were said to be still at large.

Police sources told this correspondent that about four months ago, an attempt on the life of Bhalwal ASP Munir Marith was made near Mandi Bahauddin by the Kurar gang, led by Akram Kurar, the brother of Azam Kurar.

When contacted, the jail highups were tightlipped and said an inquiry was being conducted.

PMA strike: The PMA’s local chapter announced strike twice a week against lawlessness.

PMA’s secretary-general Dr Sikandar Hayat said police could not arrest those involved in murder attempt on Dr Tahir Bashir.
