KARACHI, May 18: It has been decided to increase the number of faculties and enrolment of students at the University of Karachi. This was announced by the Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad, while talking to APP after presiding over a meeting of the KU Senate at its campus on Tuesday.

Besides, the academic standard would also be improved further in accordance with the vision plan for the varsity.

The governor, who is also chancellor of public sector varsities in Sindh, said it had also been planned to hold meetings of the KU Senate at least twice a year.

He said today’s meeting was a pre-budget one in which proposals for the varsity’s budget for the next fiscal year were examined.

Ibad was of the view that the performance of KU had improved. He said there was an atmosphere of trust and confidence among students and the faculty.

“I understand this as a healthy and a positive direction,” the governor remarked.

Ibad stressed that it be kept in mind that the end product of Karachi University should be beneficial for their respective areas and also for the entire country and its people.

He said the allocation for education in the coming provincial budget would be increased and proposals to that effect were under preparation.

He made it clear that education, health and development were the government’s main priorities besides law and order.

About the role of a varsity, the governor believed the basic function of a high seat of learning was to conduct research besides teaching.

He said research was very important and there was a lot of room for improving and increasing the same. There were also proposals in the varsity budget to that effect, he said.

Regarding the appointment of pro-VCs in public sector universities, the governor said the process was moving ahead and proposals in this connection were coming in.

He said that pro-VCs would be appointed in view of the expanding academic as well as development activities.—APP
