APROPOS the article ‘Taming the trash’ (March 7). Dumping traash in open spaces everywhere creates serious health hazards, especially for children. It is not always the municipal administration which is responsible. Our collective apathy and selfishness also contribute to environmental pollution.

I am a student of University of Peshawar and live in a hostel on the campus. There is a huge heap of garbage at the back of our hostel, and the trash from the houses of teachers and other university employees are the major source of this trash.

The staff responsible for garbage disposal simply set it on fire once a week at night. As a result, our hostel rooms get filled with smoke. Most students go sleepless.

This is a request to all Pakistanis in general, and the people living on the Peshawar University campus in particular, to show civic sense while disposing of trash.
