Zaeef’s extradition criticized

Published January 8, 2002

QUETTA, Jan 7: A leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Noor Mohammad and chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, Balochistan, Maulana Abdul Haq Baloch, on Monday condemned the handing over of former Afghan Ambassador Mulla Zaeef to United States authorities.

In statements issued here, they termed the government’s decision undiplomatic and illegal.

They were of the view that government should have given political asylum to him.

They alleged that the authorities had handed over Mulla Zaeef to the US authorities in Islamabad and rejected the government’s claim that ex-envoy had been deported to Afghanistan. They said that despite knowing that the life of Mulla Zaeef was threatened in Afghanistan, the government had rejected his asylum application.
