40,208 tax appeals disposed of

ISLAMABAD, May 11: The tax authorities have disposed of 40,208 appeals of income tax and 9,035 cases of adjudication, appeals of indirect taxes—sales tax, customs and central excise — during the first 10 months (July-April) of the current fiscal year.

This was stated by Member Legal Saeed Ahmad Zaidi while addressing the fourth quarterly conference of commissioners of income tax (appeals) and collectors of customs, sales tax and central excise (appeals and adjudication) here on Wednesday.

Mr Zaidi informed the house that total pendency in the cases of appeals of income tax on July 1, 2004 was 35,753. Later, some 18,536 fresh appeals received thus the total number stood at 54,289 cases, involving an amount of Rs37.3 billion.

During the July-April period, a total number of appeals disposed of was 40,208 and the amount involved in these cases was Rs16.4 billion. The balance number of appeals was 14,081.

Regarding the pendency of the adjudication and appeal cases of indirect taxes, Mr Zaidi informed that there were 10,892 cases of adjudication, involving revenue of Rs36.2 billion and 2,434 cases of appeals, involving revenue of Rs0.7 billion on July 1, 2004. The cases disposed of so far were 6,601 of adjudication, involving Rs25.2 billion and 2,158 cases of appeals, involving Rs1 billion.

The chairman said that he was glad that by the end of the year we would clear all the back log.
