Punjab dominate U-17 athletics

LAHORE, May 9: Punjab dominated both in boys and girls categories on the first day of the Inter-provincial U-17 athletics championship on Monday. Punjab’s boys and girls won two each. Wajahat Ayaz earned the first gold for Punjab in high-jump when he cleared 5.9m.

Shahbaz also of Punjab took second position while Waheed Sultan of Azad Kashmir earned third place.

Punjab claimed second gold medal in 4x100 metres race when its team covered the distance in 45.10secs.

NWFP and Sindh secured the second and the third spots.

Abid Ali of NWFP won a gold medal in javelin with a throw of 63.03m. Ghulam Dastgir of Punjab and Sajid Khan of NWFP secured second and third position.

In the girls’ section, Madeeha Latif of Punjab won a gold medal in shot putt with a distance of 10.58m.

Khadija Ashraf also of Punjab and Fauzia of Islamabad claimed second and third spots. In 4x100m race, Punjab clocked 55.52 secs to earn first position followed by Islamabad and NWFP.
