KARACHI, May 9: The city government has added the renovation of the Peoples’ Sports Complex, Maripur Road, Lyari as a project in the list of its uplift schemes. This was decided here on Monday in a high-level meeting held, with DCO Karachi Fazlur Rehman in the chair.

The meeting was informed that the project would be completed at a fast pace and its civil and electrical works would be completed by the end of May.

The meeting was told that the South Asia Football Tournament would be held in the Peoples’ Sports Complex in the last week of December, while the KMC ground near Central Fire Brigade had been selected as the practice ground. Teams from eight countries would take part in the tournament.

The meeting was told that all the uplift works of the ground would be completed before December and it would be converted into a soccer ground of international level.

The DCO, on the occasion, asked the District Officer (Parks) to spur the pace of the project and to complete the work by the end of May so as to make the coming international football event in the city a big success.

The meeting decided that besides growing grass, the tasks of cleaning, white washing, and making the lighting and sound system in order would be initiated at once. A media centre would also be set up in the complex, with a press conference room and facilities of telephone and fax.

It was also decided to revive the football team of the defunct KMC, and to hold trials among football players of the 18 towns, to select the football team of the city government. — PPI
