PESHAWAR, May 8: An Afghan prayer leader of a mosque in Daudzai area was shot dead on Sunday. A resident of Shagali Payan village in Daudzai area, Malik Aman, told police that he saw the Imam of the village mosque, Maulana Abdul Ghaffar, lying on the road in a pool of blood when he came out of his house on hearing sounds of gun fire. The victim died on way to hospital.

The family members of Maulana Ghaffar have not named any suspect.

ARRESTED: Kabuli police on Sunday arrested Ehsanullah, a photographer of a newspaper, on the charge of killing Nasrullah, a gatekeeper of a local cinema. The cinema’s manager told police that the accused had inflicted head injuries on the victim during a scuffle over issuance of ticket with concession on May 1.

He was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital, from where he was discharged two days ago, but his condition deteriorated on Sunday and he died at his house in Qamar Din Ghari area, police said.

WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION: The Aurat Foundation has launched the Citizen’s Campaign for Women’s Representation, 2005, to facilitate women’s participation in the electoral process.

According to a press release issued here on Sunday, the campaign’s national coordinator Suleman Abid said at a meeting that it covered all the 6,022 union councils in the country.

He said strengthening of local government institutions would ultimately bolster democracy at the higher tiers.

The meeting was informed that the foundation would take up obstacles to women’s participation in polls with the government.

A plan had been chalked out to train women candidates because a considerable number of them might be fresh contenders, the press release said.

The campaign, which was launched in February, would continue for a year.

The foundation would mobilize women to take part in the polls and motivate the incumbent women councillors to contest again, it said. Political parties and communities would also be included in the process, it said.
