KARACHI, May 5: The federal ministry of education has turned down several requests of the Sindh government to hand it over the administrative control of Dawood College of Engineering and Technology (DCET) Karachi, sources told PPI on Thursday. Well-placed sources at the federal ministry informed that Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad approached Federal Education Minister Lt General (retd) Javed Ashraf Qazi on several occasions in the past few weeks, requesting him to hand over the administrative control of the DCET to the Sindh government but his requests were turned down.

They informed that the federal education ministry, which was unwilling to hold administrative control of the DCET anymore, had itself approached National University of Science and Technology Lahore to merge the DCET with it or run its affairs as an affiliated institute but its request, too, was turned down by the management of the NUST.

In addition to that at least four in-service brigadiers of the education corps of Pakistan Army, who were asked to volunteer themselves as Principal of DCET also refused to accept the charge fearing strong political and civil society’s pressure.

It is worth mentioning here that following its disaffiliation from the NED University, Pakistan Engineering Council also withdrew its accreditation for several of its degree programmes.

There is only one ray of hope left for the ministry that PEC, following strong pressure from the education ministry, has at last decided to reaccredit the DCET, which would hopefully accelerate the process of getting rid of DCET, sources added.—PPI
