HYDERABAD, Aug 23: Component parties of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee observed a black day here on Saturday to protest against President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s support for construction of the Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal.

Leaders and activists of the parties wore black arm bands and distributed pamphlets against the water projects.

They also took out a procession from the sessions court which culminated at the local press club.

Speaking on the occasion, Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo, Sindh People’s Party Parliamentarians deputy general-secretary Maula Bux Chandio, Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Afzal Gujjar and others said the people of Sindh would not allow construction of the two projects.

Mr Palijo demanded that the projects should be shelved.

Mr Chandio rejected reports that leaders of political parties of Sindh were not protesting against Kalabagh dam and Thal canal projects.

The leaders said all the parties were united against the water projects and they would continue their struggle till the projects were shelved.

Meanwhile, PPP leaders Zaheeruddin Ghaman, Syed Fayyaz Shah, Saleem Bukhari and others observed a token hunger strike against President Musharraf and construction of the Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal.

BADIN: On the call of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee, processions were taken out in the district’s taluka headquarters.

In the Badin district, some 300 activists of the action committee component parties after marching through various thoroughfares gathered at the Mehran Chowk.

The gathering adopted a resolution that President Musharraf on his every visit to Sindh would be received with black flags as a mark of protest.
