KARACHI Aug 23: Some key decisions will be made in the meeting of all city government departments scheduled for Aug 25, with President Musharraf in chair, that would result in improving the infrastructure of Karachi.

This was stated by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan while addressing to the foundation stone ceremony of sewerage lines at Jafar Tayyar Society in Malir Town on Saturday.

He expressed satisfaction over the keen interest taken by President Musharraf in solving problems of this mega city.

Mr Khan said that the city government was paying special attention to solve sewerage problems prevailing in slum areas of the city. It would be the first priority of city government to solve water and sewerage problems, he added.

He said that some projects of sewerage lines were being completed with the funds of Rs3.5 million given to union councils.

He said that the city district government of Karachi was the only city government in Pakistan, which was giving million of rupees to union councils to carry out development schemes.

Expressing his gratitude to the citizens of Karachi, he said their support and acknowledgement was a source of encouragement for him. He said that all councillors were committed to turn it into a green and clean city.

He maintained that Rs6.4 million would be given to each union council in this fiscal to complete development projects at grass root level, as union councils are the basic institutions of new local government system. Strengthening union councils would mean strengthening local government system, he remarked.

Speaking on the occasion, Malir Town Nazim Azam Ali said that marked improvement in the situation had been witnessed in the town during the last two years.

Elaborating the same, he said, major sewerage lines had been laid in different areas, including Khokrapar and Model Colony. He further said that Rs30 million had been allocated for the relevant work in Malir.

Union Council Nazim Jaffarul Hasan said that Rs3.5 million were made available to complete the sewerage line project in four different parts of the Jaffar Tayyar union council. he said that this was accordance to envisage devolution plan meant to transfer power and authority to the lowest rung of public representatives.

The ceremony was also attended by the chairman city government community committee and Nazims and councillors from different towns and union councils of the city.—PPI/APP
